The Summits of the Americas bring together the hemisphere’s democratically
elected Heads of State and Government to debate and formulate solutions for
common political, economic and social challenges. As part of this process, the
leaders of the Americas have held the following Summits: |

IV SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS
November 2005 - Mar del Plata, Argentina |
With the theme of the Fourth Summit of the Americas—“Creating Jobs to Fight
Poverty and Strengthen Democratic Governance” —the government of Argentina
intended to give work a central place in the hemispheric agenda.
During the IV Summit, the hemisphere’s leaders defined concrete policies and
actions to generate decent employment, within a new paradigm that views
economic transformation as having a strong ethical component inherent to the
democratic system.
The meeting of the Heads of State and Government of the Americas, held in Mar
del Plata, Argentina, allowed them to reach consensus needed to strengthen the
democracies of the Western Hemisphere by creating jobs and improving living
conditions.

SPECIAL SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS
Monterrey, Mexico - 2004 |
The purpose of the Monterrey Summit was to promote and facilitate cooperation
within a renewed vision of stronger regional solidarity. The three main topics
were economic growth with equity to reduce poverty; social development; and
democratic governance.

THIRD SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS
Québec, Canadá - 2001 |
The Quebec Summit established the basis for a regional development strategy and
called for the creation of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, adopted in
September 2001. This Summit mandated activities to strengthen democracy, promote
efficient government, protect human rights, increase economic opportunities,
promote social justice and develop human potential.

SECOND SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS
Santiago de Chile, Chile - 1998 |
Education was the central theme of the Second Summit in Santiago. The region’s
leaders also discussed such issues as the preservation and strengthening of
democracy, economic integration and free trade, and the eradication of poverty
and discrimination.

SUMMIT ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia - 1996 |
With the goal of articulating a common policy on environmental protection and
adopting a shared strategy around the commitments made in Rio de Janeiro at the
Earth Summit, this specialized Summit produced a consensus on the need to
integrate economic, social and environmental concerns into the issue of
sustainable development.

FIRST SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS
Miami, USA - 1994 |
In Miami, the Heads of State and Government established a Declaration of
Principles to promote development and prosperity in the Americas based on the
preservation and strengthening of democracy. One of the most important
objectives was the creation of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).
